Abstract

This article presents the results of long-term monitoring (since 1970) of the stability of the potentially hazardous rock mass 46-R-7 on the left-bank slope of the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Plant. The authors analyze the kinematics of the massif, which is divided by tectonic faults, using data from highly sensitive deformometers and leveling instruments installed in tunnels. Based on the block’s response to industrial blasting and strong earthquakes (the Kochkor-Atinskoye and Susamyr earthquakes of 1992), a risk assessment of collapse was conducted. The absence of coordinated horizontal and vertical displacements allowed the authors to draw an indirect conclusion regarding the absence of a continuous slip surface at the base of the block, which confirms its current stability.
