JUSTIFICATION OF THE METHOD FOR ASSESSING THE STABILITY OF ANISOTROPIC EARTH DAMS
Keywords:

This article examines the need to consider the inclined-layered anisotropic structure of rocks and soils when assessing the stability of hydraulic structures. The authors point to the limitations of classical calculation methods based on an idealized isotropic medium and cite examples of large dams (Oraville, Nurek, and Tarbella) that exhibit pronounced anisotropy. The authors substantiate the feasibility of switching to numerical methods of continuum mechanics, which allow for the consideration of five elasticity parameters of a transversely isotropic medium instead of the standard two. This is critical for predicting landslide processes in heterogeneous structures.
