Abstract

This article assesses the environmental and geomechanical state of waste in the Sumsar-Shekaftar mining region, where approximately 3.65 million cubic meters of toxic and radioactive waste dumps and tailings have accumulated. The authors analyze the risks of water pollution and structural collapse associated with waste disposal in riverbeds and on unstable slopes. Finite element numerical modeling (using Stress and MatLab) is used to study the stress-strain state of the dumps. It is established that increasing slope steepness and the presence of wetted interlayers significantly affect the distribution of compressive and tensile stresses, which determines the overall stability of man-made structures.
