Abstract

This article examines the effectiveness of the ultrasonic method for studying residual stresses from welding in steel plates. The author compares the results of the traditional "unloading" (strain gauge) method and the ultrasonic method, based on data from the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute. Experimental studies have shown that high tensile stresses appear near the welded joint, and compressive stresses appear further away from the joint. The study demonstrates that the ultrasonic method allows for accurate determination of residual stresses without damaging the integrity of the material, and that the strain gauge method may not fully relax the stresses.
