Abstract

This article examines the influence of groundwater on the stability of landslide slopes through the lens of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic effects. The authors analyze the mechanisms that reduce soil bearing capacity, including the suspending effect of water, pore pressure, and the reduction of friction forces. Two equivalent engineering methods for accounting for groundwater are examined in detail: the hydrodynamic pressure (seepage forces) method and the "weighing method." A mathematical justification is provided for the reduction in slope stability coefficient upon full saturation and practical recommendations are given for determining the bulk density of soils in various moisture states.
