Abstract

This article analyzes the geomechanical processes occurring during open-pit mining of natural facing stone deposits (marble, granite, limestone). The authors substantiate the need for a comprehensive consideration of natural fracturing, anisotropy, and man-made stresses to maximize the yield of high-quality blocks ("extraction"). The paper reveals the mechanism of multi-stage stress formation in blocks: from natural geostatic pressure to thermal and dynamic loads during extraction, cutting, and sawing. Particular attention is paid to the influence of mining intensity and climatic factors (temperature peaks in July) on the formation of man-made cracks and the self-destruction of the stone. A concept of "rational mining intensity" is proposed, which reduces residual stress levels and improves the grade of extracted raw materials.
