Abstract

This article presents the results of an experimental study of the effect of microwave irradiation on the physical and mechanical properties and structural state of rocks (granite, limestone, and diorite). The author examines the mechanism of electrothermal failure, based on the generation of tensile stresses during localized heating of mineral grains. The focus is on changes in residual stresses, assessed using a nondestructive ultrasonic method (based on the difference in the propagation times of polarized shear waves). It was found that short-term microwave exposure (3–5 minutes) relieves residual stresses and softens the rock, while increasing the irradiation duration to 7–9 minutes leads to the formation of compressive stresses, which increases the strength of the specimens.
