Abstract

This article examines the mechanisms of moisture infiltration and accumulation in porous media on mountain slopes, leading to disruption of their hydrodynamic equilibrium, activation of landslides (both shallow and deep), and the formation of mudflow centers. Moisture transport in the unsaturated vadose zone under the influence of capillary and gravitational forces is described by a nonlinear Fick-type diffusion equation (the Richards equation). Using linearizing substitutions and self-similar transformations, the authors construct four modifications of new analytical solutions that enable quantitative prediction of slope saturation dynamics with depth and time.
