Abstract

This article examines the patterns and physical type of failure (brittle or ductile) in rock masses near unsupported and supported underground workings. Using Mohr's circles, the authors formulate a generalized Mohr-Coulomb strength condition for a transtropic medium, taking into account the anisotropy of rock properties. Using the finite element method, the geometric parameters of crack formation zones developing parallel, perpendicular, and at a 45-degree angle to the isotropy plane of a coal seam under the influence of geostatic and tectonic stress fields are modeled.
