Abstract

This article provides a detailed analysis of the nature and causes of failure of underground structures, mine workings, and pipelines during strong earthquakes, as well as under the influence of gravitational and tectonic forces. Based on a comprehensive review of historical and modern data, including seismic disasters in Kanto, California, and Kobe, the key factors leading to the loss of stability in underground structures are systematized. It is established that deep structures fail primarily under the influence of critical dynamic stresses, while shallow structures and pipelines deform due to significant movements of the surrounding soils.
