Abstract

This article examines the patterns of crack formation and fracture zone development in the vicinity of an unsupported mine working located in a heterogeneous transtropic rock mass. Using Irwin's direct method and eight-node quadrilateral elements within the FEM framework, the authors verified the Bovey test problem for estimating stress intensity factors. Using an adapted Casagrande-Carrilo criterion, the geometric parameters (length and opening width) of main cracks developing along, across, and at a 45-degree angle to the isotropic plane of a coal seam were numerically modeled under increasing geostatic loading at depths of up to 1000 m.
